Train-the-Trainer & Quality Assurance

Specialist knowledge stays in an organisation when it can be taught, assessed and reviewed.

  • 4 120-minute sessions

The management problem

Dependence on a few trainers, vague lesson objectives and assessments that cannot be measured.

Audience: Lecturers at maritime training centres and in-house trainers

Course aim: Design, pilot and evaluate a competence-based training unit

Key questions

  • How is a behavioural objective linked to evidence of learning?
  • How are the accuracy and version of reference instruments checked?
  • What evidence of quality does pilot teaching provide?

Measurable learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Design behavioural objectives and a consistent rubric
  2. Review a lesson pack against primary sources, versions and legal status
  3. Deliver a lesson pack and a 20-minute pilot lesson

Sessions

  1. E04-S01 · 2 hours

    Backward design from outcomes

Audience, behavioural objectives, evidence of learning and pass criteria

Assessed output: A map aligning objectives and assessment

  2. E04-S02 · 2 hours

    Building a reliable lesson pack

Primary sources first, versions of instruments, citation and common biases

    Assessed output: A source-checking sheet

  3. E04-S03 · 2 hours

    Active learning and assessment tools

Case studies, simulation, rubrics, feedback and accessibility

Assessed output: An exercise and rubric

  4. E04-S04 · 2 hours

    Pilot teaching and review

A 20-minute delivery, peer assessment and the final version

Assessed output: A completed lesson pack

Core scenario (fictional, for training only)

A fictional lesson pack is presented with outdated instruments, vague objectives and an unrelated test. Teams revise it and deliver a short lesson.

Final project

A lesson pack and micro-teaching assessment

Criteria: precise identification of the problem and sources, clear reasoning, organisational accountability, prioritised actions, stated limitations and readiness for presentation to a decision-maker.

Method and assessment

Backward design, rubrics, a 20-minute pilot lesson and peer review. Interactive teaching, case analysis, group work and trainer feedback.

Short test 20%, session exercises 40% and final project 40%. The suggested criterion for an internal certificate of completion is at least 80% attendance and a score of 70 out of 100; this is not an official IMO or STCW standard.

Official sources

The train-the-trainer course is an internal training quality programme. On its own it does not create a licence or competence to teach STCW courses.
